Fishpond cultivation and fishing tradition

The Otava river used to be most abundant in fish of all south bohemian rivers, especially there were many salmons, but the river became famous also thanks to the pearl oyster catching. It is favourite destination of both game and occasional fishers nowadays as well. The city Vodňany is known for its fishing and fishpond cultivation tradition. Ponds, that are characteristic for the surroundings, were founded in the second half of the 15th century.
